Day One - Brisbane to Neil Turner Weir

As planned we managed to drive out at 4.30am , only due to Terry's marathon effort on Wednesday following two days of day/night back to back shifts and of course Nathan who volunteered to take a few extra days off school to start our holidays early.

We took it easy stopping a couple of times having lunch in Roma. The weather has been kind to us and if you know us well you would know the rain tends to follow our trailer. A very cool 0 degrees as we passed through Oakey, 2 degrees in Toowoomba, warming up nicely to reach a very pleasant 19 degrees with a skinny wind to keep us tepid. We decided to free camp just outside of Mitchell as a popular rest area called Neil Turner Weir.

We drove in around 2.30pm and were set up by 3.00pm so were about 30 other people ahead of us. A lovely spot well away from the main road with cattle and a horse in the property backing the camp ground. I tried to coax the horsey with an apple, he needed no encouragement happy for a pat but only sniffed at my yummy apple. I ate the other half.

Its 4.00pm and we've had an afternoon cuppa and game of Nathan's new empire Monopoly. A very fun alternative to the traditional, he won of course which is always nice when its your first game of your new game.

The sun is starting to go down and so with the shadows comes the cool night air. I think we may need an early dinner to escape the night air. Perhaps a walk soon to check out the lovely spot before we head to Longreach tomorrow.

I would definitely check out another free camp if it is like this. Very well facilitated toilet block complete with soap, SHOCK! but alas no shower good thing we are all in the same boat and baby wipes make an easy but cool birdy bath.
