Sunday 29 June 2014 (Day 4)
We are travelling from Longreach to Cloncurry today.
Another glorious day following a cooler night, average minimum temp 6 degrees. We bid farewell to Longreach heading toward Cloncurry. We stopped at Winton for morning tea. A sneaky little wind is keeping the locals very happy given that their temperatures are often brutal. The coffee from the local bakery cafe was exceptional as was the sausage rolls.
We continue to travel west north west with more company on the road than we have seen so far.
This country never ceases to inspire and amaze me; the open plains of recent harvests, of paddocks bare with hoove marks, of grazing live stock herds of healthy looking sheep and cattle.
I love the black star studded sky. The sky in its wonder draws my eyes heavenward in awe. It is a sky preserved for those who venture beyond the excess lighting of the city scape that dampens the intensity of those heavenly bodies.
We stopped for lunch at McKinlay known for "Walk about Creek Hotel" use in the Crocodile Dundee movies. A lovely rest area off the main road displayed some history of the township which also hosts the smallest Queensland public library.
We passed the free camp site outside of Cloncurry, it was right on the main road and offered little shelter from the noise. We instead drove directly into Cloncurry staying at the Oasis Caravan Park one of two in the town and host to more than the 6 caravan sites offered by the Discovery Tourist Park as you first come into town. A busy little place it was to, by the end of the night there was overflow caravans and campers happy to find a patch anyway off the highway. Cost $28.50 for the night $25 for 2 adults $3.50 for Nathan.
Lots of large (up to 6 tailers) road trains travel through this town carrying various cargo from livestock to flammables. I hope these road trains slow down at some point through the night or at least hope that sleep overtakes me and I don't hear them.
