Monday 7 July 2014 (Day 12)
We are staying in Kununurra
We got to the information centre along with the other hundred people that arrived in Kununurra on Sunday afternoon. Armed with information we headed to Emma Gorge for a walk followed by a late lunch a Five Rivers Café in Windham recommended for its fish and chips.
Emma Gorge is part of the El Questro National Park and we had to pay our $12 per person for our day visit. It was estimated to take 2hr return not counting the time spent enjoying the gorge. We found a much more fun and luscious walk that Katherine's Butterfly Gorge; more large rock hopping than walking on gravel and a lot more rainforest shade cover. The gorge a hosted a magnificent waterfall and swimming hole. The water temperature 15-22 degrees but I think it was 15. After the significant walk one looks forward to a refreshing dip but it was more like a numbing plunge but once in and a good swim to the waterfall one adjusts. Nathan's 'go pro' camera has turned out to be a winner for such adventurous filming. The Emma Gorge is pristine with the rocky area providing a shore like entry to the clean clear water. Opposite the falls are water droplet that fall heavily and evenly from above, you can see each drop as it falls. For the rock climbing enthusiast and as a reward for braving the cool water we decided to climb to a natural spa area where warm water flowed out from between the rocks which nourished the cold extremities but like most things one must climb down and touch the icy water below again.
Having earned our appetite we drive another 100km to Windham for our lunch only to find the café closed having missed the lunch time period by about an hour so we drove up to the Five Rivers Lookout which overlooks the port of Windham and rivers that provide the economic and transport needs of the area.
Oh, we did have a small opportunity to window shop at the jewellery selling Argyle Diamonds. What an exclusive and unique gem that comes in five shades, pink being the rarest and most expensive, brown-pink, pink-purple, yellow and champagne the most common and affordable for some. Beautifully designed pendants and rings but all well out of my budget. There is bound to be someone that is more financially equipped to support this industry.
We arrived back about 4.30pm all a little tired. The temperature feels as though it has dropped suddenly this afternoon though the figures don't reflect it. Terry's little thermometer pick up a maximum temperature of 39 degrees (inside our camper) and minimum of 14.8 such a broad range and with very little humidity a the top end this time of year so it's no wonder we feel the cool when the sun goes down.
We are watching the moon, its at about half, I am hoping we make it to Broome for the full moon phenomenon of the Staircase to the Moon which occurs around the 13th of July.
Temperature Min 15 deg. Max 29 deg.
