Tuesday 8 July 2014 (Day 13)

We are staying at Kununurra

After our day at Emma Gorge yesterday we decided to have a look around Lake Argyle which is about 100km back east from Kununurra. It was an easy drive out and the view well worth the effort. We stopped at the resort for a coffee and watched the Helicopter take off and land for those taking flight tours. We drove on to experience an expansive body if water that has side but seemingly no end and its the bluest cleanest looking water. The dam that divides the lake from the Ord River looks just like a mountain of rock that if one was to pull one rock out of the middle the whole thing including the road atop it could collapse. We enjoyed our lunch at the picnic spot further down sharing bread crumbs with some local birds.

Heading back to the other side of the town we ventured to the Zebra Rock Gallery, this is a well established tourist attraction. They retail gifts and jewellery made from the zebra and similar rocks equally unique to the Kimberley region, pearl jewellery from Broome and a mix of the two, some truly beautiful pieces. There are some residential peacocks that will happily eat bread from your hand, a platform on the Kununurra River where a mass of catfish will surface eagerly for bread almost climbing over one another to compete for the bread snacks. It also has a café where a cool drink is always appreciated in this warm climate.

Our return back to camp was welcomed by our friends Debra and Peter who started their trek several weeks before us and are on their way back. It was an enjoyable reunion, sharing some stories, good places to go and where not to go and of course the travelling war wounds (no so many of the human kind but of the equipment)...such a lovely couple, we shall look forward to meeting them once home to reminisce over a long lunch.
