Thursday 10 July 2014 (Day 15)

We are staying at Fitzroy Crossing

We are slow starting this morning after a very cool 6 degrees overnight which required the resurfacing of our flanny PJ's once again. We had a lovely leisurely bacon and egg breakfast which was a nice change from our normal cereal.

We drove our only about 18km to Geike Gorge known for its limestone. We chose not to do the boat tour opting for the 4.8km walk. It was a hot day and the walk over sand with little shade made it an arduous walk not to mention the prickly weeds along the way. We saw one fellow who cut through the foliage to find himself having stripped to his undies in order to rid himself and clothing of the prickles, yep good enough reason to stay on the path alright. The reward was not as spectacular as one was hoping for. No swimming aloud due to crocodiles and in fact the gorge was unremarkable we were more or less standing on the edge of  a river though it being the infamous Fitzroy River should give it more merit. Perhaps the boat ride would have improved its appeal.

The picnic are was lovely and clean so our lunch was taken there. The shed that housed information about the Gorge also marks the flood water levels over various years and let me tell you that's a good reason why the wet season is not peak season and why so many roads get cut. The shed itself stands approximately 12 metres above sea level and some of the flood water levels rose 2 meters above the shed's roof line. That's a heck of a lot of water!

On our return drive we thought to pop into a local art and blown glass gallery, unfortunately like many local industries having closed doors looses business. I was quite looking forward to looking there as there is only a few tourist activities that create revenue.

The remainder of our afternoon was spent organising accommodation for Broome. A might tricky and after 4 phone calls we found a place. The busyness due to the full moon and associated Staircase to the moon phenomenon and school holidays
